Asha Onco Counseling

Emotional counselling for cancer patients and caregivers, so treatment of the body is not faced without care for fear, fatigue, and hope.

Full story

A cancer diagnosis changes more than a medical file. It changes sleep, appetite, work, and the way a family speaks around the dinner table. Patients often hide fear so they will not worry their children. Caregivers hide exhaustion so they will not seem selfish. Doctors treat the disease. Very few people treat the quiet terror that travels with it.

Asha exists because cancer care is incomplete without emotional care. NiVan Foundation's onco counselling walks with patients and caregivers through diagnosis, treatment, waiting rooms, and the uncertain months that follow. We do not offer miracle language. We offer a trained counsellor who understands that hope and fear can sit in the same chair.

In many hospitals, psycho-oncology is scarce or priced beyond ordinary families. People travel for chemotherapy and go home with no one to talk to about nausea, guilt, or the question they are afraid to ask. Caregivers, usually women, carry appointments, money, and the patient's mood, and then collapse in private.

This campaign funds counselling sessions close to the treatment journey: at a community space, by phone when the patient is too tired to travel, and in caregiver groups where people can admit they are tired. It funds counsellors who know when to listen and when to refer for psychiatric care. It funds the simple logistics that keep this work humane: time, privacy, and continuity so a patient does not have to retell their story to a stranger every week.

Your donation does not replace oncology. It restores dignity to the hours around it. When a patient feels accompanied, treatment is still hard, but it is no longer lonely. That is Asha: a lamp beside a difficult road, not a claim that the road has disappeared.

The need

Cancer patients and their families face anxiety, depression, sleep loss, and caregiver burnout while navigating treatment. Professional onco-psychology is limited, costly, and rarely available outside major centres. Those affected include patients in active treatment, people in remission who still carry fear, and family members who have become unpaid nurses. Without counselling, distress goes untreated and can worsen isolation and treatment adherence. Accessible emotional care alongside medical treatment is necessary for humane cancer support.

How your gift helps

Donations fund one-on-one counselling for patients and caregivers, counsellor time in or near treatment periods, and phone sessions when travel is too exhausting. A portion supports caregiver groups, counsellor supervision, and referral pathways if psychiatric care is needed. Remaining funds cover a private session space, simple materials, and coordination with families so appointments are reliable. Every rupee is meant to sit beside medical treatment, not to pay hospital bills or chemotherapy.

Expected impact

This campaign aims to support 60 cancer patients and 40 caregivers with counselling. We plan approximately 400 sessions, including phone follow-ups, and 16 caregiver group meetings. At least 25 patients will receive continuity of care across a treatment cycle rather than a single conversation. Success is measured in sessions completed, caregivers who attend groups, and people who report they have somewhere to put fear that is not only the hospital corridor.

During chemo I smiled for everyone. In counselling I could say I was terrified of leaving my children. She did not tell me to be positive. She stayed. I went to the next cycle feeling less alone inside my own head.
