GiVa Grief Counseling

Compassionate one-on-one grief counselling so families facing loss are heard, supported, and never left to mourn alone.

Full story

When someone we love dies, the world does not pause. Bills continue. Relatives ask practical questions. Work expects a return. In that rush, grief is often treated as something to finish quickly. Many people in our communities have no private counsellor, no language for what they feel, and no one who will sit with them without offering advice they did not ask for.

GiVa was created for that silence. NiVan Foundation's grief counselling programme walks beside individuals and families after a death: a parent, a partner, a child, a sibling, or a friend. We do not ask people to "move on." We offer a steady place to speak, cry, remember, and slowly learn how to live with absence.

The need is practical as well as emotional. In many households, the person who held the family together is gone. Survivors may be in shock, unable to sleep, or struggling to care for children while arranging last rites and paperwork. Neighbours are kind for a few days. Then the house grows quiet. Without support, grief can settle into isolation, anxiety, and a sense that no one understands.

This campaign funds trained grief counsellors who meet people where they are: at home, in a quiet community space, or by phone when travel is difficult. Sessions are confidential, culturally respectful, and paced to the person, not to a calendar. Where needed, counsellors also guide families toward peer circles, remembrance gatherings, and further care.

Your donation does not erase loss. It makes sure that someone trained, patient, and present is there in the weeks and months when support is hardest to find. That accompaniment is how GiVa turns empathy from a private burden into a shared practice.

The need

After a death, many families in India receive sympathy for a few days and then face grief alone. Professional bereavement counselling is scarce, costly, or concentrated in cities. Rural and low-income households rarely have access. Children, spouses, and elderly parents are left to manage shock, sleep loss, and daily responsibility without a trusted listener. Unattended grief can deepen isolation and strain family life. Timely, affordable counselling is necessary so people can mourn with dignity and remain connected to care rather than disappearing into silence.

How your gift helps

Donations pay for individual counselling sessions, counsellor honorariums, and quiet spaces where families can speak without interruption. A portion supports follow-up visits in the first three months after loss, when isolation often returns. Funds also cover volunteer facilitator training so more listeners can sit with families, outreach so bereaved households know help exists, and simple materials for remembrance and session notes. Every rupee is directed toward care that sits beside the person, not toward one-time sympathy.

Expected impact

This campaign will support approximately 80 individuals and families with structured grief counselling over the campaign period. We aim to complete 320 one-on-one sessions, train 12 volunteer facilitators, and offer follow-up care to at least 60 households in the first 90 days after loss. Where needed, families will be referred into GiVa peer circles. Success is measured in sessions completed, families who return for follow-up, and people who say they no longer feel they have to carry grief by themselves.

After my husband died, everyone told me to be strong for the children. In counselling I could finally say I was tired and frightened. Someone sat with that pain. I still miss him. I do not feel invisible anymore.
