Full story

Death does not wait for a family to be ready. In the same afternoon, relatives may need a priest or imam, firewood or a burial plot, transport, a shroud or white cloth, and the first round of paperwork. For households already living close to the edge, these costs arrive before anyone has had time to absorb the loss.

GiVa Last Rites Assistance exists for that window. NiVan Foundation does not treat a funeral as a transaction. We treat it as a duty of dignity: the right of a person to be laid to rest with care, and the right of a family not to be humiliated while they are in shock.

We have sat with families who delayed a cremation because they were collecting money from neighbours. We have met daily-wage workers who lost a day's income and then faced a bill larger than a month's earnings. In those hours, people should not have to choose between honouring the dead and feeding the children who are still here.

This campaign funds a rapid-response fund for last rites: essential funeral expenses, transport of the deceased where required, modest ritual costs according to the family's faith, and a trained volunteer who can help the family think through the next practical steps without taking over their rites. Support is assessed quickly, respectfully, and only for verified need.

Your gift does not buy ceremony for show. It removes a crushing bill from a day that is already too heavy. When last rites are completed with dignity, families can begin grieving instead of bargaining. That is the first act of GiVa: standing with people at the threshold, so they do not have to cross it alone.

The need

Funeral and last-rites costs often fall on families with no savings, no insurance, and no time to plan. A death in a daily-wage or informal household can mean borrowing at high interest or delaying rites while money is gathered. The people affected are spouses, parents, and children already in shock. Intervention is necessary because dignity at death should not depend on whether a family can pay immediately. Timely assistance prevents debt, delay, and public distress at the worst possible moment.

How your gift helps

Donations create a last-rites response fund used for essential funeral costs: cremation or burial expenses, transport, ritual items the family actually needs, and a modest contribution toward priest or community rites when the household cannot meet them. Funds also support a volunteer coordinator who verifies need quickly and stays with the family through the day. A small share covers documentation so assistance is accountable. Money is released for verified cases, not as a general cash giveaway.

Expected impact

This campaign aims to support last rites for approximately 40 families with verified financial need. Each case will include essential funeral costs and a coordinator present through the process. We expect to complete assistance within hours of a verified request wherever possible. Families will also be offered a path into GiVa counselling and peer support after the rites. Success is measured in rites completed without delay caused by money, families who were not forced into high-interest debt for the funeral, and follow-up care offered after the burial or cremation.

We did not know how we would complete the last rites for my father. Someone from GiVa came the same day, spoke gently, and helped with what we could not pay. We could say goodbye without asking the whole street for money.
